The third week of the make it blue project kicked off with our volunteers participating in a renovation
program at the Dominican nuns of the city of Maiori. They began by rehabilitating the walls of the
kindergarten canteen, where we plan on renovating the room in a more modern approach while focusing
on maintaining the historical details of the building. The nuns introduced us to the history of the church
and how it came into being run by the Dominican order, while also having interesting conversations
regarding the sense of community and its values.
Furthermore, the volunteers have been engaged in other renovation activities throughout this week. They started by helping the elder community of Maiori in renovating a little space in front of the garden of the Centro Socio Culturale per Gli Anziani. Volunteers have repainted the railing and fixed a damaged part of the wall, engaging along the way with the elderly community and bonding furthermore with them.
Our volunteers have continued the week activities by supporting the municipality of Maiori in promotingand preserving the
cultural identity of the Amalfi region by guiding visitor in the Santa Maria de Olearia, a former abbey which has a history dating back more than a millennia and which has now been turned up into a museum open for the public to visit. Its fascinating placement, which is inside a stone mountain cave, its spectacular view to the Amalfi coast s waves and its old frescos are an amazing interpretation of the 10th and 11th century religious culture and are now maintained and renovated by the municipality, with the help of local NGOs.
After the former success of Acarbio’s collaboration with the elderly association, our volunteers were invited again to spend an evening with the community s elders, which took part in dance classes presented by the dance teacher Salvo Trotta. On latin dance rhythms, no matter the age differences or nationalities, everyone had a great time together.
Our volunteers finished, after 6 days of hard work, the canteen renovation at the kindergarten of the Dominican sisters. The kids will be welcomed in a restored room, more fit to the modern style and needs of the new generation of kids. The same day, one of our volunteers presented a workshop about the european opportunities that the young have access to, optimal ways to access them, and how to get the full experience out of every opportunity.
