Acarbio’s “make it blue” project brings a new wave of volunteers

On August 23rd, the town of Maiori welcomed a group young Europeans from ten different
countries: Italy, Serbia, Turkey, Spain, Georgia, Czech Republic, Germany, Poland, Armenia and
Romania. They came together for the third flow of the “Make it Blue” project, organized by the
ACARBIO association. This initiative is dedicated to supporting the local community through a
series of activities that not only benefit the area but also foster cultural exchange and
environmental awareness.
For the first day of the project the volunteers from the third flow were connected with the
previous flow’s volunteers, who shared important information regarding their experience here in
Maiori. They also had some kick-off teambuilding activities and a treasure hunt with the purpose
of getting to know the local community and the city grounds.
In the second day, the volunteers were presented the details regarding the activities they will
undertake for the rest of their stay, which included the promotion and presenting of a Maiori city
tour, presenting of the Palazzo Mezzacapo, beach cleaning and the general outline regarding
the work flow they will follow the next month.

After these two days finding their feet in the city, the volunteers started their activities. They
guided tourists through the Palazzo Mezzacapo, cleaned the free beaches of Maiori, provided a
city tour for some interested tourists… The volunteers taught the history of Maiori, and they
showed the most important places in the city, with examples like The Santa Maria a Mare
church, the Palazzo, the municipality garden… They engaged further away into bonding
activities within the group and of course, focused on having a great time.

Furthermore, one of the Acarbio ESC volunteers developed an exhibition in which the “Make it
Blue” participants took part by organizing and presenting it. After the art exhibition’s opening ,
the participants were invited to the Maiori’s elder party, where they bonded with the local
community even more, through cultural exchange like different dances and music. The Maiori
seniors were pleased in having this activity with Acarbio’s volunteers and this image could also
be visible by the numerous passing tourists that engaged in the party.
To end up, during Friday morning the participants engaged in artistic activities in which they painted the public benches in San Pietro, a small square in Maiori, with characteristics inspired by the Amalfi Coast. In the afternoon, they were met with a surprise they long awaited – a new turtle nest was discovered. The discovery was made when a series of hatchlings were seen uprising the sand by the people attending the beach. At sunset, all the twenty-three newborns were safely delivered to the sea, by marine biologist of Protected Marine Area of Punta Campanella helped by ACARBIO`S staff, Make it Blue volunteers and ENPA.
