The sixth edition of Make it Blue kicks off

The project by the Acarbio association, summer 2024, takes place in the municipality of Maiori

The sixth edition of Make it Blue is taking place in Maiori, one of the largest towns on the Amalfi Coast. The group of volunteers, mostly university students, come from Norway, Sweden, Germany, France, Spain, Bulgaria, Serbia, the Czech Republic, Turkey, and Italy. Coordinated by the Acarbio association, in collaboration with Zattera Blu and the European Solidarity Corps program, through the Italian Youth Agency, they will carry out a series of activities.

From promoting the cultural heritage within the “Don Clemente Confalone” sacred art museum located in the crypt of the Collegiate Church, to cleaning public beaches with the aim of raising awareness about marine environment protection; from supporting the local community to enhancing lesser-known and less frequented tourist routes.

BEACH-CLEANING EVENTS

On Friday, the 21th of June 2024, our volunteers of the Make it Blue project alongside some members of the organization ACARBIO hosted a beach-cleaning event on two of the main beaches of Maiori. To remind you, one of the aims of this project is the preservation of the environment and especially by cleaning the beaches of the city as it has, among the whole Amalfi Coast, the longest sea coastline.
With this event, we wish to spread awareness about the importance of preserving biodiversity and encourage the local community and tourists to participate in the common interest to protect the natural landscape of Italy. Multiple events like these ones will be organized throughout the summer in order to raise the awareness among a large number of people.

As part of the preparation, our volunteers came up with some ideas in order to catch the attention: first, they made some signs to promote the event and then, prepared questions to interview people about what they know about the environment, sea pollution and sustainability. Also, before the event, our volunteers already started to clean the beaches in order to assess the amount of garbage. Throughout the event, thanks to the signs and the ACARBIO t-shirts, they managed to grab people’s attention and inspired them to join in the process of cleaning. We ended up collecting six bags of garbage from three different beaches in Maiori.

Finally, the second event also took place on June 28th. Event by event they hope to get more people’s attention as well as more participants in order to reach their goal of raising awareness about the importance of protecting the environment especially on the amount of garbage thrown onto Maiori’s beaches.
